Tiki Masks
5th Grade
Students will learn about Tiki Masks. They will create a tiki mask using tempera and sharpie.
Tiki masks are hand-carved wooden masks that that were a part of Ploynesian and Hawaiian culture, in their original intent, were used to protect their users or even increase the mask wearers' luck. They served many purposes, both in the privacy of people's homes and in everyday life. They thought that the masks would protect the border of their homes. Tiki Masks have been in existence for thousands of years.

Students will choose a monochromatic color to make a shape of their hand. The hands will be assembled on a tree to make a group mural.
Monochromatic colors are all the colors (tints, tones, and shades) of a single hue. Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding a darker color, gray or black.
