OP Art and Lines Week 3

OP Art:  a form of abstract art that gives the illusion of movement by the precise use of pattern and color, or in which conflicting patterns emerge and overlap. Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely are its most famous exponents.

Here is a video that gives examples of OP art.

5th Grade:  Students will make an OP art image. (line illusions)
I found this picture at:

4th Grade:  Students will make an OP art image. (shading blobs)

3rd Grade:  Students will make an OP art image.  (hand)

2nd Grade:  Students will make an OP art image (warm and cool colors)
warm/cool colors

K and 1st:  Students will learn about different types of lines and create a rocket blasting off picture with various lines shooting out behind it.

First practice lines as students listen to "A Line is a Dot that Went For a Walk."

Classroom Management

I am working on my art room class management.

This year, I am going to use Class Dojo to track class behaviors, so I will explain how the class can earn points for positive behaviors or have points taken away for negative behaviors.  When the class reaches ten, twenty, thirty points, etc.,   they can choose a class reward such as no seating chart for a day, do a "Just Dance" activity, etc.

Ideas for class rewards that are free:

  • No seating chart for a day
  • Do the Cha Cha Slide
  • Make a Harlem Shake Video
  • Free Painting Day
  • Do a "Just Dance"
  • Listen to jokes at the end of class
  • Watch a silly YouTube video
  • Light graffiti
Teach students the quiet signal.
  • I say, 1 2 3
  • They say, eyes on me
  • I say, 3 4
  • They say, we talk no more

The Dot," Sept. 15

September 15 is International Dot Day.  I am planning to have students listen to the book, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds.

Ideas for class activities:

~Make a dot by not making a dot. Tape a circle to a larger paper. Paint dots with a q tip.

~Students will create a crayon relief watercolor dot.  They will glue the dot to the Colar Mix Dot page.   Download And Print this PDF .  All pages will be assembled in a three ring binder. Students will then use the ColarMix app to view an augmented reality of the dot coming to life!  The binders will remain in the art room with an ipad as a station for students to do when they finish work early throughout the year.

First day of teaching art!

This is going to be my first year teaching elementary art!  Here is what I am going to do on the first day!

I am going to show this PowToon I made to go over art room class expectations.

http://www.powtoon.com/show/dp49UfSpl7C/art-room-expectations/#/

I am also going to use Class Dojo to track class behaviors, so I will explain how the class can earn points for positive behaviors or have points taken away for negative behaviors.  When the class reaches ten points, they can choose a class reward such as no seating chart for a day, do a "Just Dance" activity, etc.

Next students will discuss what art is.  3rd- 5th graders will be given a sticky note and will finish the sentence, "Art is..."  They will discuss their answers with their group.  Post the sticky notes on a poster.  K-2nd graders will orally discuss what they think art is.

*2014:  This is now my second year teaching art.  This year for the first day activity we are going to do a draw a rhyme superhero since we are doing a whole schoo superhero theme this year.

Then students are going to draw a self portrait using only one color of different shades.  Portraits will be displayed in the hall.  Each group will have a different color out to use.
I found this lesson idea and picture at:

When students finish, they will have a tub on hands on activities at their table to choose from.

If time play this video:
